Designing Innovative Livestock Breeding Strategies in Ethiopia
"Promoting Young Animal Scientists to Promote Animal Agriculture"
Scientific Workshop
May 30, 2023 – June 2, 2023, Bahir Dar, Ethiopia
To facilitate knowledge transfer about new and innovative livestock breeding strategies in Ethiopia, a scientific workshop with 50 participants is planned to be organized in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.
The workshop is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and will be organized by the University of Bonn, Germany, and Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia.
For this workshop, local and international invited speakers will present their scientific findings and their experiences in the fields of livestock breeding policies, priorities in the design of livestock breeding programs, and the role of molecular genetic approaches in livestock improvement programs in Ethiopia.
In addition, based on their scientific merit and their professional profile, junior researchers (1-4 years after completing their Ph.D.) will be invited for abstract and poster presentations and eight junior scientists (in the first year of their Ph.D. or MSc. studies) will be encouraged to participate in the workshop without abstract or poster submission.
To encourage junior scientists, those with the best abstract and poster presentations will be awarded a certificate. The workshop events include plenary sessions, panel discussions, and field visits.
To familiarize the workshop participants with the challenges and opportunities of livestock research in Ethiopia, and to generate additional inputs for the subsequent in-venue sessions and panel discussions, a field visit to Andassa Livestock Research Center and School of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine will be organized on the 2nd day of the workshop.
The workshop is expected to stimulate possible scientific expert-driven animal breeding strategies to foster sustainable animal production improvements in Ethiopia. Moreover, this workshop will increase the awareness of junior scientists to be key players in the future of animal improvement programs in Ethiopia. This workshop will also provide noble opportunities to develop short, medium and long-term joint research collaboration between the University of Bonn and Bahir Dar University and other research and high-learning institution elsewhere.
Abstract submission
All invited speakers are expected to submit extended abstracts and junior researchers are expected to submit an abstract and a poster.
Please follow the abstract formatting guidelines below and send your submission via e-mail to PD Dr. Dessie Salilew Wondim and Dr. Mengistie Taye.
The submission is open until 10th May 2023.
Abstract selection for oral and poster presentations
All relevant abstracts that adhered to submission guidelines will be accepted and compiled as a conference proceeding.
Moreover, 17 abstracts submitted by junior scientists will be selected for short oral and poster presentations.
Better abstracts that could fit for oral presentation will be selected based on their scientific merit (originality of the study, innovativeness of the research methodology, relevance of the findings).
In addition, the candidate’s scientific background and previous scientific achievements will also be considered and thus junior scientists are requested to submit their curriculum vitae and reference letters during abstract submission.
The travel and accommodation costs of abstract winners will be covered by the workshop.
Abstract winners will be notified until 15th May 2023.
